Has broken out a cylinder!

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

How many times have we heard this sentence, and how many other common places, or idioms, that we did not never analyzed correctly, because we were looking at what was happened and at the damage to person and things.

But the cylinders do not erupt, they are not bombs, they are pressure containers and as all the containers they may break, and this happens when the internal pressure exceeds the resistance of the container.

When this happens there is a leakage of the contents, which is usually liquefied gas, which in contact with the air and in some cases in the presence of sparks, explodes. This brokes out! Therefore it is the content that broke out, while the cylinder can break or at list move because of the violent escape reaction of the gas contained in it.

The problem of the damage and the danger linked to rupture remains, so it is necessary that the manufacturers of pressure vessels follow closely the regulations which deal with these containers and which regulate the precise characteristics and the operational limits.

The cylinders for domestic gas or camping, which are more widespread, are all tested at a pressure which is much more higher of the operating and one of those, taken with a certain frequency from production, is brought to rupture and it withstands impressive pressures, so it is unlikely impossible that a cylinder for the home gas breaks down or “explodes”, but it can nevertheless be that we forget to close the trade, with the consequences that we know.

There are many other pressure receptacles installed on equipment and all these must be CE marked and, depending on the use, must submit checks by notified institutions who attest the conformity of the product, but it is the manufacturer who has to accomplish all the practices for the marking, which is the only way to the marketing.

Therefore, stay calm about the out breaking of the cylinders, but….. look at the mark!

GAS APPLIANCES, here the rules!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

In the design and the construction of gas appliances there must be respected many rules, which concern the type of apparatus.

We provide the list of such standards, warning that it is not exhaustive as the activity of standardisation is continuous.

Anyway the designer or the manufacturer must know these rules to evaluate which one he must respect and how he has to apply them.

The work of the consulting firms is the conduct of investigations on the rules to apply and in setting up the necessary procedures to ensure the respect of such standards.

This work is very important because it is possible to compare the specific knowledge of the products of the builders with the external evaluation of conformity and security of the equipment. It is from this collective work that may birth the best products, which ensure at the same time the users and the manufacturers.

Here is the list of the rules on gas appliances:

UNI 7129 Ed. December 2001

UNI 10845 Ed. February 2000

Ministerial Decree of 26 November 1998

UNI – IGC May 10738 1998

UNI 10723 Ed. March 1998

UNI – IGC 10642.1997

UNI – IGC 10641.1997

UNI – IGC 10640.1997

UNI – IGC June 10436 1996

UNI – IGC June 10435 1995

UNI – IGC June 10389 1994

Read n. 626-494-528.1994

Decree of the President of the Republic 26 August 1993 n. 412

Ministerial Order of 21 April 1993

Decree of the President of the Republic 6 December 1991 n. 447

UNI – IGC June 9731 1990

Law of 5 March 1990, n. 46

UNI – IGC 9615 year 1990

UNI – IGC 8723 year 1986

UNI – IGC February 8364 1984

UNI – IGC 7131 year 1972

UNI – CIG 7129 year 1972

Law of 6 December 1971, no. 1083

Decree of the President of the Republic 22 December 1970 n.1391

Law of 13 July 1966, n. 615

As you see they are numerous and for each one it is necessary to run a deepening and an analysis. The use of external technical is not only useful, but recommended for a comparison and a verification of the correct interpretation.
